The Marquee Club - A tribute site dedicated to the history of the legendary Marquee club at London's 90 Wardour street.

80's by Martin Brimicombe

"I was a card carrying club member in 1982 and worked as a roadie for IQ who played (as you know!) many times. I visited The Marquee from 1981 til' it closed in Wardour Street (and a few gigs at New Charring Cross Road). A few gig memories that I couldn't see on your lists may be of interest, sorry I can't tell you dates. First that springs to mind is that I'm sure I saw Billy Bragg support Marillion on one of the Christmas '82 gigs. INXS played in 1985 at the time of the release of "Listen Like Thieves" LP. I didn't get into the gig but saw the sound check and met the band (all nice except the drummer!). I saw The Lover Speaks headline there in 1986. I saw Eloy headline 1983 or 1984 (the album they were touring was "Performance"). I saw Angel Witch play there late '81 (they must have played there earlier too as I feel sure there was a Headbanging scare when someone had a brain haemorrhage at a Marquee gig they did). I saw a band called BlueBlud suppert there in '81 think Silverwing and Wrathchild were the main bands. IQ played on July 13th 1985 as a Live Aid gig (not really related to the main one). The LAs were scheduled to play when Way Out was released but they cancelled (Nov 87?) - I think tickets were sold. Indians In Moscow played in 1984 for the release of their LP. Sam Brown played in 88 must have been one of the last in Wardour Street.
